Fresh off her night of fasting, Christi was eagerly awaiting the ultrasound. The goal: keep JJ baking as long as possible! At 8:30am our favorite ultrasound tech arrived, and began administering the ultrasound. We instantly realized the amniotic fluid went down, and knew what was to come...Christi's all-inclusive hospital stay was coming to an end. The doctor met with us and we were told we'd be delivering in the early afternoon (we thought this meant around 1pm). This began the long process of waiting to deliver our 29-week-old baby; only once in my life have I been this scared and nervous.
Christi did an amazing job keeping me calm during the morning hours, and after lunch it was my turn to keep her calm. At around noon, we were informed that the C-section was scheduled for 2:30pm (great, another hour and a half). In the meantime, Christi's parents were able to drive down before JJ's arrival. 2:30 came and went, and the doctor was nowhere to speak of. Finally, she arrived at 3:15 and we were ready. Christi was wheeled off, while I was moved to the recovery room. A nurse gave me some scrubs, told me to get dressed, and said she'd be back for me after Christi was prepped in approximately 20 minutes. That was the longest 20 minutes of my life.
After what seemed like an eternity, I was brought into the room. A few short minutes later, Christi and I heard the reassuring cry of our baby boy. That was the sweetest sound we've ever heard!
Joel Patrick Davidson was born at 3:52pm weighing in at 1lb 12oz and 12.5 inches long. He came out kicking and screaming. We knew we had a feisty one on our hands when he pulled the breathing tube out a few minutes after it was inserted. He was having none of that! The doctor's worked to quickly stabilize him, before wheeling him by Christi and I for a quick glimpse on his way to the NICU. He was so animated, and actually opened his eyes to look at the both of us. Beautiful!
Christi had to spend her mandatory hour and a half in the recovery before she could be wheeled by Joel's incubator for a quick five minute visit before she was banished to her room.
