He has been very active with his hands and legs since day 1, but even moreso lately. It's cute to see him kick his legs around, then tuck them under his blankets to keep snug. They build a "nest" of blankets around him to help keep him contained. It's comforting to him, since he would be very snug if he hadn't been forced into an early arrival! He also has been waving his arms around lots. He's very good at getting his hands back near his face, which is a baby's way of calming themself. This means when he has meltdowns (which is virtually anytime he's disturbed from his naps), he is able to quiet himself with little help.
He's also been using his itty-bitty pacifiers more. He seems to understand the concept of sucking on them, which is good practice for when he can start taking bottles! This is lots of progress for only a week and a half!
The other fun thing he has been doing more recently is opening his eyes and looking in my direction when I talk to him. I don't know how much he can see, but he sure tries! He hates it when I bring out the camera, too...especially when I forget to turn off the flash. The red-eye light makes him flinch every time, so we have to be sneaky to catch his cute little "smiles" and other faces he makes! He is very opinionated and expressive. It's cute now...not sure how cute it'll be in a few years!
He was weighed and measured last night, and he grew a whole centimeter in his first week! Great job, Joel! He has gained a tiny bit of weight, but it typically won't really pick up until the next week or two.
Overall, this sweet little boy continues to go full-steam ahead. If he knew the two dogs that await him at home, he might not be in such a hurry...

We LOVE the updates and photos! It's great to see his eyes open - he's trying everything! What a determined little guy! We love him!
